Mary in a Martha World

A couple of months ago I was reading in Luke about Mary and Martha.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”  “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
 Luke 10:38-42

God brought it back to my mind again and again. Martha wasn't wrong necessarily in her busyness but Mary chose what was better. I just kept thinking about Mary choosing what was better. Choosing what was better. I can choose too.

So, my word for 2012 is "choose."

A couple of other verses came to mind about choosing also.

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.
Deuteronomy 30:19

and

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15

Here is to a year of choosing what is better.
